Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

This is considered non surgical treatment for periodontitis.  In  scaling and root planing, your periodontist or dental hygienist will perform a deep cleaning of your tooth root surfaces. treatment begins with scaling beneath the gum line to remove plaque and other bacterial toxins from periodontal pockets. Root planing includes smoothing of the tooth root to prevent future plaque or toxins from adhering. Topical or local anesthetic or sedation can be used as needed to assure your comfort.  It is usually also appropriate to review oral hygiene procedures to maximize the likelihood of success.

Many patients experience significant improvement after scaling and root planing. However, if increased pocket depth and inflammation persist, then surgical treatment may be appropriate.   The majority of patients will require ongoing periodontal maintenance to sustain periodontal health.
